Alessandro Candiani received his B.S. degree in Telecommunications Engineering from Univeristy of Parma, Italy, in 2005, with a thesis entitled: Study of near field measurements in Photonic Crystal Fibers (Tutor Prof. Stefano Selleri). Then, he started his MSc on Networking at the University of Parma, Italy; while he was visiting student for one year in the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, with Erasmus Scholarship. He was a visiting Msc student (Oct. 2007-Nov. 2008) at the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas, working on device development using Photonic Crystal Fibres, wherein he completed his MSc thesis. Since October 2009 he has rejoined the group working on ferrofluid infiltrated microstructured optical fibre photonic devices. He received his Ph.D. in Information Technologies by the University of Parma in 2013, defending a thesis on "Optical fiber sensors for physical and biological measurements".

His current research activities include fiber laser for high power applications, optical fiber sensors, biosensing, photonic crystal and holey fibers.
